Diary Extract

Tuesday 14th October 1593

Dear Diary,

It finally happened! I have been waiting a year for this! The publication company finally finished my poem! I was exhilarated! It was my first poem ever published. It is called Venus and Adonis, and it is about a man called Adonis, who everyone thinks is beautiful. Venus however the goddess of love, wants to get him married. When Venus was told that Adonis would rather go hunting, she was outraged and felt disrespected. She was so enraged that she sent a wild boar to attack him to teach him a lesson. However, the wild boar ended up killing Adonis. The whole village was distraught, and instead of killing or getting revenge on the boar, they let it back into the forest. I love animals and I want to stop killing them for unnecessary reasons which is why I decided to put this act of kindness in the poem. The poem is 199 stanzas long, which is why it took me a long time to right it, and I wanted to give up several times. The public already love it! It is sold out, and the publishers are having trouble keeping up with all the demands. I feel so proud and happy of myself!

I  have some very sad news. My father is feeling sickly at the moment, and the doctors only suspect he will live another week. I cried my heart out until I had no more tears last night when I got the news. He has been a great source of comfort to me, and I can't imagine life without him. Otherwise, the people love my plays, and keep asking me for more. My acting group is on tour right now (I don't go with them, because I am working on writing more plays) and I want to surprise them with a brand new theatre to let them perform in! I will use the money that my plays collect, and use it to build the Globe theatre! I was so excited when the government let me build my theatre! I will spend the rest of the money on making the theatre as cheap as possible so all people can come and see my plays, no matter how poor or rich they are. I am writing a whole new play called Julius Caesar, to premier the theatre opening, and I believe that it is my greatest show yet! I was so indulged in writing it, that I stayed in my study for three whole days without coming out. On the other hand, my hand is hurting from writing all those lines, so I had to go see the doctor. It is nothing to serious, but I cannot write for another week. I hope that I can finish the play in time for the grand premier. I just hope that the people will like it.
