Proposal

Dear Mrs. Marquez,

Today I am writing to you to convince you that William Shakespeare is worth my time in researching for the Night of the Notables project. Shakespeare was most definitely the most influential and notable person to ever live! He is widely known throughout the globe for his English, drama and humanitarian work. He is referred to as the greatest writer of all time!

Before I begin, we need to learn more about Shakespeare himself. Shakespeare was born on either the 15th or the 26th of April 1564 (birthdate not confirmed). He lived in Stanford, England, and remained to live there for all of his life. He was writing plays until almost the day he died. With most of the profits that Shakespeare made, he donated to build a theatre where most of his play performances took place (The Globe Theater).

First of all, Shakespeare is most definitely notable because he created over 1700 words! To put that into comparison, Roald Dahl invented a mere 500 compared to Shakespeare, and Charles Dickins, the famed writer, created 8! As you may know, it's very hard to invent words, but even harder to invent them and for them to still be used in 500 years! A few examples of the words Shakespeare invented are: bandit, critic, lonely and assassination. These are some words we use in everyday language today.

Secondly, Shakespeare gave us a great sense of value in human life. He tells us that it's okay to be who we are. In his plays he taught us how other people lived back in the time when he was alive, answering many of historians' questions about that time period, like how Shakespeare stopped writing plays when the Black Death arrived, because the actors couldn't perform them (sound familiar?). Some of Uranus' moons were even named after some characters from his plays. Such as Juliet and Ariel. He is one of the reasons that we know so much about the times that he lived in. His plays take 'something ordinary, and turn it into something extraordinary' such as hatred, revenge, passion and despair. His plays also ask a question to the audience: "which one of those characters on stage would I want to be?"

Lastly, Shakespeare was never afraid in what other people thought about him, he donated money which other people at the time were not interested in doing, he based the characters in his plays on his life, so that he could write them easier, and he was not reluctant to include death, revenge, or puns and humor in his plays (Many other playwrights at the time were afraid of what the public thought) and unsurprisingly, the public loved it, and still love it today.

In conclusion, Shakespeare is unquestionably notable because he created over 1700 words, he gave a sense of value in life, and he was never afraid in what other people thought about him. So Mrs. Marquez, that is why I most definitely must choose William Shakespeare for my Night of the Notables project.

Yours Sincerely,

Ambrose 6M
